Description:

Bruskers Guitars Duo: How to play guitar DUOS Language: English Media: Video on line Pages: 116 Making music with other people is certainly an exciting activity. In thinking over our experi- ence, what brought the “Bruskers Guitar Duo” to life and how we developed over the last years, we wanted to jot down a number of suggestions, rules of thumb, to give everybody the chance to explore the world of ensemble music in an exciting way, starting from the simplest guitar ensemble you can think of, the guitar duo. Playing in a duo is definitely a unique experience. It’s quite different from playing a solo guitar, where a single instrument has to provide for every single element of the piece, or from playing in a threesome, for which - no matter which instruments are involved - the melody, accompaniment and rhythm are treated separately and the different sections play high, middle or low registers. Instead, in a guitar duo there isn’t any clear distinction between the sections and the rules are par- ticularly flexible. This is probably why the guitar duo can be considered the link connecting the solo and the ensemble approach. Before starting a piece with two guitars you have to analyze it and study its details so each of the two musicians doesn’t struggle while ordering his/her own personal ideas. This hap- pens because rhythm, melody and accompaniment can sometimes coexist in one single section. For this reason, and so as not to fall into the cliché that “I play the melody - you play the chords” you need to find a balance between work, understanding and synergy: these will make your interpretations interesting and original. In the three handbooks we describe and analyze many of the possible ways a piece can be played with two guitars, and back up our advice with numerous technical and musical suggestions. “How to play Guitar Duos” is a series of three handbooks of increasing difficulty, which explore the features of playing in a guitar duo. These three books are not meant to impose a “method” in an academic sense, but should be seen much more as “notebooks”, which can be used by students as well as by non-professional players. Theory is expressed in a conversational way and supported by examples and by some of our own original composi- tions, with pre-playing technical exercises complete with tablature and videos. We also in- clude some revised traditional jazz standards so that you put what we explain into practice. Besides being “notebooks”, the three handbooks are also intended for teachers, who can use them as a collection of repertoire pieces. They can be useful for practising some tech- nical features, such as arpeggios, rhythm patterns and percussions. Some compositions also contain written improvisations, which can easily be replaced by the students’ own.
